Jacob Is Put Off the Greyhound Bus

Jacob's Ladder

Jacob Livingston’s removal from the Greyhound bus turns an illness and an interrupted journey into a humiliating low point, while placing him at the SeaView Motel in Santo Ignacio rather than leaving him in the middle of nowhere.

Illness and Refusal

Jacob says he has a cold and insists that taking Tylenol will be enough for him to recover. He asks how much farther the bus has to travel, but the driver tells him that he will not be going on to his intended destination and orders him to get off. The scene establishes the immediate circumstances of the interruption without giving a fuller explanation for the driver’s decision.

The Order to Leave

The driver makes clear that the order is not a request: she says she will ask the other passengers to help remove him if he does not get off. Her emphatic demand turns the bus into a place from which Jacob is being actively expelled. A man who had sat beside him earlier looks at him sadly, then turns his attention toward something outside in the darkness; his brief reaction offers a small, silent contrast to the driver’s insistence.

Stranded at Santo Ignacio

The driver identifies the location as Highway 101 in Santo Ignacio and the nearby lodging as the SeaView Motel, assuring Jacob that the passengers will not be left in the middle of nowhere even as she repeats that he must leave the bus. Jacob takes his duffel from the locker and watches the driver board again. The engine growls, the pneumatic doors close, and the bus pulls away, leaving him behind. He frames being thrown off as a descent below an already rock-bottom moment, making the bus’s departure the event’s final measure of his humiliation and isolation.
